heian godan

heian godan, last of the heian kata, is easily the most advanced of the five, and has a strong focus of combination techniques executed in quick succession. the first jump learned in kata is technically demanding, and the switching of stances in the final moves tests the skill of the student. the video below goes through the kata in more detail.

important points for heian godan:
- keeping elbows tight in the first section
- double-blocking with both hands from the right shoulder
- smoothness
- correct application of hip turning
- jumping using the knees, travelling vertically (not laterally)
- positioning of back hand/wrist in manji gamae
