heian shodan

heian shodan, the first ('sho') of the five heian kata, closely follows the pattern of kihon kata. while the focus is still on very basic movements and correct posture, the kata is rich in applications. it introduces the back stance, kokutsu-dachi, with knife-hand blocks at the end, and the hammer-fist strike tetsui.

- distinction of front and back stance
- finishing the knife-hand block
- maintaining posture while turning
- correct weight distribution in back stance
