new children's karate classes

instructor: sensei john maclelland, 1st dan black belt, qualified KUGB instructor

we are very pleased to announce the start of children's classes at kenmei, aimed specifically at younger students aged 6 and up; it may be possible to accept children a little younger, but please contact us to discuss first. sensei john will be instructing in the art of shotokan karate, in a relaxed and fun environment that will include the fun and games not usually included in the regular kenmei classes. the course is open for complete beginners, and runs for one hour on sundays from 2 - 3pm. there are no requirements for previous experience, and everyone is welcome. loose clothing such as jogging bottoms and t-shirts is fine.

what will i learn?

basic techniques and ways of moving, including blocks at different levels, body shifting, coordination of muscles for kicking and striking. form the beginning, it will be possible to learn most of the techniques required for the first belt test, including pre-arranged kumite (sparring) and the first kata (traditional form). after the required amount of training and demonstration of progress, students will be invited to take their belt gradings with the main club (approximately every three months). as students progress and get older, they are welcome to join the main club at the regular training times.

what is the cost?

karate is a great hobby, sport, and way of life; we are keen to make it as accessible as possible. please come and try it for free, at any session; you will be very welcome. to cover costs, we ask for 4 per session - the club does not run for profit. in order to take gradings, the Karate Union of Great Britain requires a (yearly) licence (24) and a uniform, which can be obtained through the club (10).
